Abstract

In pathology teleconferences are already used to demonstrate and to discuss cases with clinical partners or other pathologists respectively. Until now video livestreams of histological slides are the method of choice to share histopathological informations. On the one hand this enables the participants to watch and analyse the identical field of view. On the other hand every participant is only able to view the fields which are presented by the host. Furthermore, it is hard to maintain good image quality for high resolution live streams. In addition, a sufficient infrastructure has to be implemented. This includes a high quality microscope with attached video-camera as well as high band width internet-connection.
The purpose of this tutorial is to look at viable alternative methods for practising telepathology with a focus on whole slide imaging (WSI) solutions. Firstly, we will discuss preferable features of WSI-applications in order to enhance teleconferences. Based on this the participants will actively analyse advantages and disadvantages of several WSI-applications. As a result of the tutorial we will create a list of the most useful features for teleconference in the context of pathological image sharing.
With the example of telepathology we want to show how new web-technologies could be implemented in order to enhance the clinical routine.
