Background: Diabetes affects 8.3 percent of the US population and the overall diabetes health care costs were estimated at $174 billion in 2007, which is expected to double by 2034. Chronic wounds are persistent, non-healing wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers. Such wounds are a significant health issue affecting 5-6 million in the U.S. They are painful, susceptible to infection, and for individuals with type 2 diabetes, can lead to amputation of the affected limb.
